“One day you may even run a marathon,” Tze
Wei said, way back in 2008. Don’t joke. I pulled my muscle within a week of
trying forefoot running style, too much of a change, too fast, and in the wrong
shoes. I picked up my running shoes again in 2009, to build aerobic fitness to
go diving with my son Jonathan. 2.4km on
the treadmill for a start. Then you notice the race banners for 10km…. Serene
said, “10km, should be do-able and fun. Why not?” 10km 2009 Run for Hope done
happily. 42km, uh, got hope, why not?
Onwards, to the 2009 Singapore Standard Chartered Marathon. In the 2011
Singapore Marathon, I paced AYG along the seaside, then ran away to my Sunday
morning clinic. After work, I went to the finishing line at the Padang, in time
to marvel at AYG finish after enduring 8
hours. I told Serene about AYG plodding along with his abundant mass over 8
hours in the hot sun. Wow! How about the Great Wall next? The nuns from her Tianjin diocese did it in
their habit to raise funds. Uh-huh. Ok, Ok, they can do it, I…… To run the
distance and scale the heights. In life, “nothing is impossible”.
AYG: "I will add captions and rearrange photos at a later stage. For now, just enjoy the photos and admire Cheow Ju and see how he conquers the Great Wall of China."
This is where it all started and finished. Yin Yang Square at HuangYaGuang (Yellow Cliff Pass) village at the Great Wall. 130km East of Beijing and
100km north of Tianjin.
Congratulations, Cheow Ju. Didn't realise that my endurance in my own marathon can be an inspiration to you. Complete not compete has always been my motto. Well done. ABC Runners I am sure are proud of your feat. Keep the spirit of ABC Runners high.
